Why we need your help: 2009 accomplishments

This has been our busiest year yet as our work load has increased. Times are still tough but we need your donations more than ever.  We have no paid employee’s, only volunteers, so 100% of your donations go to the animals.

So far this year we have spayed or neutered over 60 feral cats.  We have rescued kittens from feral colonies and placed them with new adoptive families. We have been assisting citizens and businesses alike in solving their feral cat challenges all over Central Texas. We have been pro-active in reducing the feral cat population in our community.

We can tell you that our legislative agenda has been very successful in 2009. This year alone we lobbied the Killeen City Council to update their dangerous dog ordinance to make it more effective, to increase restrictions on backyard breeders, to prohibit dog tethering, and to enact a comprehensive feral cat program.

We’ve continued working with Adult Protective Services (APS) to help the elderly and disabled to better care for their pets.

Assisi has started a new program to help the city of Killeen cope with its feral dog population.  These are not merely stray dogs.  While feral dogs tend to roam in a particular neighborhood, they are cunning and difficult to capture.  Yet Assisi has rescued several of the adults and puppies and placed them in foster homes. Cesar Millan, “The Dog Whisperer”, has advised one of our foster moms on some of the unique problems in dealing with feral dogs.  This is a new and expensive program, and its’ unique in Central Texas.

Assisi has taken a strong stand against the Exotic Animal Petting Zoos and Circuses that have invaded Central Texas. We research these operations, file complaints with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and educate Central Texans about the abuses that take place behind the scenes at these fly-by-night operations.
